A SHORT PROFILE
With the induction of Science Section in the College in 1969, Physics was introduced as one of the Core Subjects in the Pre-University Course under Dibrugarh University. Mr. A.H. Laskar was in charge of the Physics Department under the management of the Gargaon College Governing Body. B.Sc. Course was first introduced in the College in 1974, and affiliation for the Degree Course was received in the same year from Dibrugarh University. The College Science Section received Grant-in-Aid from 1975 (1st December) with due concurrence from the Govt. of Assam. With the establishment of the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council in 1988, the Pre-University section of the College (both Arts & Science) was undertaken by the Council. Major in Physics in the B.Sc. Course was first introduced in 1988, and permission and affiliation was obtained in the same year. Since 1992, the Department of Physics has been functioning with six Lecturers and two laboratory bearers (assistants). The laboratory has a capacity for thirty students having Physics as a core subject, and ten students having Physics as Major.

The Department of Physics has been able to make a record success in producing 80 to 100% pass percentage results in the final examinations in the last few years. In the final year examination of 2005, cent percent success has been achieved in the category of both Physics Major and Physics Core.

For promoting quality of education and to promote still better results, the Faculty Members of the Department under the Chairmanship of Prof. P.K. Boruah, has adopted a few resolutions:

(1) To cooperate in the fresh system of imposing Internal Assessment as per the guidelines of Dibrugarh University

(2) To assign home works to the students and the papers evaluated for the purpose of Internal Assessment

(3) To institute Sessional Examinations

(4) To consider students’ attendance for purpose of Internal Assessments.

The Department has its own built up area with full laboratory facility and also the requisite classrooms for theory classes. With its experienced Faculty Members, Office Staff and the necessary infrastructure the Department has its fresh aspirations and vision to introduce new self employable subjects in near future.
