A SHORT PROFILE
The English Department of Gargaon
College started functioning with the strength of
only one teacher, Dr.C.S.Rao in 1959. A little
later, he was assisted by Mrs.D.K.MacFurlong as a
part-time lecturer, who worked temporarily for a
couple of years. By 1977 there was a total strength
of four teachers and Major course was introduced. At
present there are six regular faculty members and
one on temporary service. The Department has been
functioning smoothly and satisfactorily all along,
since.
The Department offers
opportunities to the learning of English as a
General Course as well as English Major. The
Department has an attached classroom wherein only
the Major classes are held. The General English
classes are held in various other classrooms for all
the sections, viz. Arts, Science and Commerce. The
Department has its own Library for the benefit of
the students pursuing English Major. Though there is
a sizeable collection of books at present yet the
effort is on to enhance the Library facilities.
The teachers constantly strive
for exposing the best literary talents of the
learners. With this aim in view, the “Gargaon
College English Literary Association’ was founded
where the students’ ability in the literary field is
judged through various competitions. The students
maintain the Departmental Wall Magazine by
contributing articles, poems, quotations and so on.
The teachers publish their own papers by which the
students of the College are encouraged and guided to
become more creative and self confident.
The Department encourages
holding of seminars in the College as well as in the
regional and state level. The students of English
Major have to make presentations in the Department
on topics that are mostly related to their course of
study. The concerned teachers assign the respective
papers. The presentations are attended regularly by
two or three teachers of the Department. The
‘English Literary Association’ organized a seminar
on the theme “Problems and Prospects of Learning
English at the Undergraduate Level” for the welfare
of the learners of English. The seminar was attended
by a number of students and teachers as well.
Apart from such activities the
Department sponsors literary competitions for the
general students as well as students of the (+2)
level. The Department has also been sponsoring the
Inter-Departmental Cricket Competition since the
last few years. This has encouraged the students to
build a long lasting relationship both indoors and
outdoors. The students of the Department organize
the annual Picnic in the last week of December to
welcome the following New Year. Almost all the
teachers participate in this annual get-together to
maintain a jovial relationship with the students.
